What Is a Probate Search?
A probate search allows you to check whether probate has been granted for a deceased person’s estate. This is useful for beneficiaries, legal representatives, and anyone needing access to a will or probate records. In the UK, probate records are public documents once probate is granted.
How to Search for Probate Records in the UK
1. Use the UK Government’s Probate Search Service
You can search probate records online via the official UK Probate Registry website:
- Visit Gov.uk - Find a Will
- Enter the deceased’s full name and date of death
- If probate has been granted, you can order a copy of the will or grant of probate (£1.50 per document)
2. Search for Older Probate Records (Before 1996)
For probate records before 1996, requests must be made to:
- HMCTS Probate Service (for England & Wales)
- ScotlandsPeople (for Scotland)
- PRONI (for Northern Ireland)
3. Check the Principal Probate Registry
If you cannot find records online, you can visit the Principal Probate Registry in London or a local probate office to conduct a manual search.
What If Probate Hasn’t Been Granted?
- If probate is still in progress, records will not be available yet.
- If the deceased had low-value assets, probate may not be required.
- If probate is delayed, you may need to check again later.
Why Conduct a Probate Search?
- To confirm the existence of a will
- To find out estate details (including asset values)
- To challenge probate if you suspect unfair distribution
- To locate missing beneficiaries
