How to Apply to Cambridge MBA Internationally - A Guide for Overseas Applicants

Learn how international applicants can apply to the Cambridge MBA from abroad, including degree requirements, work experience, GMAT or GRE scores, English testing, essays, references, interviews, funding and UK visa planning.

Applying to the Cambridge MBA from abroad is a structured process, but international candidates need to prepare carefully before submitting their application. Cambridge Judge Business School welcomes applicants from different countries, industries and professional backgrounds, with the admissions process assessing the complete candidate rather than relying on a single qualification.

For professionals applying from Nigeria, Africa, Asia, the Middle East or other international markets, preparation should cover academic qualifications, professional experience, test scores, references, essays and the practical requirements of moving to the UK.

Applications for the Cambridge MBA 2027 entry are currently open, with five application rounds running from August 2026 to May 2027.

Check the Cambridge MBA Entry Requirements First

Before starting an international application, make sure you understand the basic requirements.

Cambridge currently looks for candidates with:

  • A good 2:1 undergraduate degree or international equivalent

  • At least two years of full-time work experience by the start of the programme

  • A valid GMAT or GRE score

  • Strong English language ability

  • Evidence of career progression

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills

  • Leadership potential, ambition and resilience

Cambridge says the average MBA class has around six years of work experience. However, applicants with the minimum two years can still be considered if the rest of their profile demonstrates strong potential.

Apply Online From Outside the UK

You do not need to be living in Britain to start your Cambridge MBA application.

The application is completed online through the Cambridge Judge Business School application portal. Applicants can create an account, save their application and upload the required supporting documents before submitting it.

A completed application currently requires a £165 application fee, although eligible applicants from certain low-income countries may qualify for an application fee waiver.

For applicants from eligible countries, Cambridge states that the fee waiver can apply where the applicant is a national of an eligible country and has lived there since birth.

Prepare Your GMAT or GRE Before Applying

The GMAT or GRE is compulsory for the Cambridge MBA.

Cambridge does not specify a minimum GMAT or GRE score, but the school publishes average scores to give applicants an indication of the typical level among successful candidates.

The current published averages are approximately:

  • GMAT current format - 625-635

  • Previous GMAT format - 690-700

  • GRE Verbal - 76%

  • GRE Quantitative - 60%

Cambridge also says it looks for balanced performance across the test sections.

Your score must be valid when you apply, and Cambridge does not offer a GMAT or GRE waiver for the MBA.

If you are applying internationally, take the test early enough to leave room for another attempt if your first result is weaker than expected.

Make Sure Your Degree Meets the Standard

Cambridge normally requires a good 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent.

Applicants with lower academic results may still be considered, but Cambridge indicates that a strong GMAT or GRE result will be particularly important in such cases.

International applicants should upload their degree certificate and academic transcripts as part of the application.

If you receive an offer, Cambridge may require your academic qualifications to be verified through Qualification Check, an ECCTIS-approved education verification service.

This makes it sensible to obtain official copies of your academic documents well before submitting your application.

Build Meaningful Professional Experience

Meeting the two-year work experience requirement is only the starting point.

Cambridge looks for evidence of career progression, so your application should show how your responsibilities have developed and what you have achieved.

For example, an international property professional could demonstrate experience in:

  • Property investment

  • Property management

  • Development projects

  • Refurbishment

  • Construction coordination

  • Real estate sales

  • Landlord services

  • Financial analysis

  • Contractor management

  • Portfolio management

An applicant working in technology, finance or consulting could similarly demonstrate progression through increasing responsibility, project ownership, team leadership or measurable business results.

Focus on what you achieved rather than simply listing what your job involved.

Prepare the Cambridge MBA Essays

The Cambridge application currently requires a careers objectives statement of up to 500 words and three shorter essays of up to 200 words each.

The career statement asks applicants to explain their short- and long-term objectives, how the Cambridge MBA will help them achieve those goals, what research they have done into their intended industry or role and how they are preparing for that career transition.

The shorter questions ask applicants to discuss a professional mistake, their best team experience and an individual who positively influenced their life.

These questions give Cambridge an opportunity to understand how you think, learn and work with other people.

Avoid writing generic statements about wanting to attend one of the world's best universities.

Instead, build a clear connection between:

Your past experience → your current capabilities → your career objectives → the skills you need → why Cambridge.

Choose the Right Professional Referee

Cambridge requires one reference from a supervisor.

The school does not accept academic references, relatives, peers or ordinary colleagues for this requirement. The referee should have worked with you in a supervisory or managerial capacity.

Choose someone who can provide specific examples of your:

  • Leadership

  • Professional development

  • Problem-solving

  • Teamwork

  • Initiative

  • Strengths and weaknesses

  • Potential for future leadership

Tell your referee about your MBA plans before entering their details into the application. This gives them time to prepare a useful and detailed reference.

Check the English Language Requirement

International applicants whose first language is not English need to pay particular attention to Cambridge's English requirements.

Cambridge states that English fluency is a prerequisite for the MBA. If English is not your first language, you must normally have taken a recognised English proficiency test within the required period before September of the year you are applying for entry.

Check the current Cambridge English-language policy before booking your examination because accepted tests and requirements can change.

Do not assume that being educated in English automatically means you are exempt.

Prepare for the Cambridge MBA Interview

After reviewing applications, Cambridge invites shortlisted candidates to an interview.

For the current admissions process, Cambridge states that MBA admissions interviews are held virtually.

This is particularly convenient for international applicants because you do not normally need to travel to Cambridge just to attend the admissions interview.

Be prepared to discuss:

  • Your career history

  • Your biggest professional achievements

  • Leadership experiences

  • Career objectives

  • Why you want an MBA

  • Why Cambridge

  • Your international experience

  • Your strengths and weaknesses

  • Difficult situations you have handled

  • How you work in teams

  • What you would contribute to Cambridge

Prepare examples rather than memorising speeches.

Apply Early If You Need Funding

Cambridge currently operates five MBA application rounds for 2027 entry:

  • Round 1 - 24 August 2026

  • Round 2 - 5 October 2026

  • Round 3 - 4 January 2027

  • Round 4 - 22 March 2027

  • Round 5 - 4 May 2027

Cambridge specifically encourages applicants to apply early, particularly those relying on scholarships, bursaries or loans to fund their studies.

If you are applying internationally and need financial assistance, do not automatically wait for the final deadline.

Starting early gives you more time to investigate funding and prepare the required financial documentation.

Plan Your UK Student Visa

For international applicants, receiving an MBA offer is not the final step.

Cambridge states that nationals from outside the UK or Ireland will normally require a student visa to study the MBA. Visa rules can change, so applicants should check the latest UK immigration requirements before travelling.

Once your offer becomes unconditional and you have completed the required steps, you can begin the appropriate visa process.

Plan ahead for:

  • Passport requirements

  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies

  • Financial requirements

  • Visa application fees

  • Immigration health requirements where applicable

  • Travel arrangements

  • Accommodation in Cambridge

Avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements before you have the appropriate immigration permission.

Budget for More Than Tuition

Studying for an MBA abroad requires a realistic financial plan.

An international Cambridge MBA student should consider:

  • Tuition fees

  • Accommodation

  • Food

  • Transportation

  • Visa expenses

  • Flights

  • Insurance or healthcare-related costs

  • Study materials

  • Personal expenses

  • Initial relocation costs

Cambridge also requires successful candidates who accept a conditional offer to pay a non-refundable reservation fee of £7,950, which is applied toward tuition fees, and provide a financial guarantee that they can meet the programme costs.

Understanding these costs early can help you determine how you will fund the MBA before committing to the programme.

Use Your International Experience Properly

International applicants should not treat their overseas background as merely a location on their CV.

Your experience can become part of your value as an MBA candidate.

For example, someone who has worked in Nigeria could bring experience of:

  • Emerging-market business

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Infrastructure development

  • Property investment

  • Rapidly changing consumer markets

  • Financial inclusion

  • Urbanisation

  • Technology adoption

  • Cross-border business

The important question is what you learned from those experiences and how they influenced your ambitions.

Cambridge explicitly says it values diversity and recognises the different international experiences and opportunities candidates may have had.

Property Professionals Can Build a Strong Commercial Profile

Professionals working in real estate can develop a compelling MBA profile by taking responsibility for commercial and operational decisions.

For example, an applicant might have experience coordinating a London refurbishment, analysing a property investment, managing contractors or improving the performance of a rental portfolio.

That experience can demonstrate financial awareness, project management, negotiation, leadership and commercial judgement.

Fraser Bond supports property owners, landlords, investors and developers across London and the wider UK with property sales, lettings, property management, compliance, refurbishment, building works, repairs, maintenance coordination, contractor support and development consultancy.

Make Your Cambridge Application Tell One Story

A strong Cambridge MBA application should feel consistent from the first page to the interview.

Your CV should demonstrate progression.

Your essays should explain your ambitions.

Your reference should support your professional potential.

Your GMAT or GRE should demonstrate academic readiness.

Your interview should bring the entire story together.

The goal is not to appear perfect. The goal is to show that you have achieved meaningful things, learned from your experiences and have a credible reason for taking the next step.
