UK Elite School Application Deadlines Guide

When international families should apply to Britain's most selective schools

British Elite Schools Application Deadlines

When to apply to leading UK private and boarding schools, and why international families often need to plan several years ahead

Applying to a prestigious British private or boarding school is rarely a last-minute process. Many of the UK's most selective schools require registration years before the child is due to start, particularly for competitive entry points such as Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form.

For international families, early planning is even more important because applications may involve school references, entrance assessments, interviews, English-language testing, visa arrangements and accommodation planning.

There is no single UK-wide deadline for private schools. Each independent school sets its own admissions timetable, so parents should always confirm the current dates with the school.

Eton College application deadline

Eton College's main 13+ entry requires parents to register their son by the end of UK School Year 5.

Eton currently states that registrations close on 31 August at the end of Year 5. This deadline was previously 30 June, so families should not rely on older admissions information.

The process then continues through Year 6, including the ISEB Common Pre-Test, school reference, interview and further assessment.

This means parents interested in Eton should begin planning well before the actual Year 9 entry date.

Eton also has separate routes for King's Scholarships and Sixth Form entry, with different registration timelines.

Harrow School application deadline

Harrow School's 13+ admissions process also requires significant advance planning.

For Year 9 entry, registration is normally completed by 30 September of Year 6. Families applying after the normal registration period may face fewer available places.

The admissions process includes a confidential school reference, ISEB Common Pre-Test and the Harrow Test for candidates who progress through the process.

International families should therefore avoid waiting until the year immediately before entry.

Westminster School application deadline

Westminster School uses different admissions arrangements depending on the age and entry point.

For 16+ entry in September 2027, registration opened on 1 June 2026 and closes on 30 September 2026.

For overseas applicants, Westminster also requires additional preparation. For example, candidates whose English is an additional language need to provide an appropriate UKiset or IELTS profile by the application deadline.

The school's 2027 overseas entrance examinations are scheduled for November 2026, followed by interviews later that month.

Westminster does not offer international boarding places for Years 9 to 11, so overseas families should carefully check the entry route before applying.

Sevenoaks School application deadlines

Sevenoaks School is an important example of why parents should check deadlines carefully because different entry points have different application schedules.

For Year 7 entry in 2027, the application deadline is currently 21 September 2026.

For Lower Sixth entry in 2027, the deadline is 1 September 2026.

Year 9 is more complicated because Sevenoaks offers Early Decision and Later Decision routes.

For Year 9 2029 Early Decision, the deadline is 21 September 2026. For Year 9 2028 Later Decision, the deadline is 1 November 2026.

The school therefore demonstrates why families should not assume that every British boarding school uses one standard deadline.

Wellington College application planning

Wellington College is another major British boarding school that attracts both UK and international applicants.

Its admissions calendar varies according to the entry year and year group. Families should begin the process considerably earlier than the intended start date, particularly for competitive boarding entry.

International parents should also consider whether the school provides the appropriate boarding and sponsorship arrangements for their child's circumstances.

Rather than relying on a general annual deadline, families should check the school's admissions calendar for the specific year of entry.

Winchester College application deadlines

Winchester College has highly competitive entry points, particularly at 13+ and Sixth Form.

Parents should register well ahead of the intended entry year and review the school's current admissions timetable before making educational or relocation decisions.

The school's requirements can include references, assessments and interviews, meaning that meeting the registration deadline is only the first stage of the process.

St Paul's School application deadlines

St Paul's School in London has competitive admissions at several ages.

The appropriate registration deadline depends on whether a child is applying for junior school, 13+ entry or Sixth Form.

International families should pay particular attention to the school's requirements for overseas applicants because academic records, entrance examinations and English-language ability may need additional preparation.

Typical planning timeline for international families

Although deadlines vary between schools, an international family can use the following as a practical planning framework:

Three or more years before entry

Research schools, compare entry points, consider boarding requirements and identify schools that match the child's academic and personal profile.

Two to three years before entry

Register for schools that require early registration. Arrange school visits where possible and begin understanding entrance examination requirements.

One to two years before entry

Prepare for entrance assessments, obtain school references and complete the formal application process according to each school's timetable.

Year before entry

Complete interviews and entrance examinations where applicable. Review scholarship, bursary and boarding arrangements.

Several months before entry

Finalise the place, deposits, accommodation arrangements and, where applicable, immigration and Child Student visa requirements.

Why international families should apply early

For families applying from Nigeria, the Middle East, Asia, Africa or other overseas markets, the admissions deadline is only one part of the timetable.

Travel arrangements, school visits, entrance-test preparation, references, English-language assessments and immigration requirements can all require additional time.

Some schools also have limited boarding places or specific international admissions arrangements.

Parents should therefore distinguish between registration deadlines, assessment dates, offer dates and final enrolment deadlines. Missing the initial registration deadline can prevent a child from entering the normal admissions process altogether.

Do not assume every elite school has the same deadline

One of the biggest mistakes families make is treating British private-school admissions like a centralised university application system.

Independent schools set their own requirements and dates. GOV.UK confirms that applications for private schools are made directly to the school rather than through the standard local-authority process used for many state-school applications.

For this reason, parents should build a separate admissions calendar for every school they are considering.

Property and relocation planning alongside school applications

For overseas families, school admissions are often part of a much larger relocation decision.

Where a family plans to move to the UK, accommodation, property management, refurbishment, maintenance and other practical property requirements may need to be arranged alongside the education process.

Fraser Bond can support the property side of an international relocation through relevant property services, including property search support, management, repairs, maintenance coordination and refurbishment.

Education admissions should remain with the school or a suitably qualified education specialist, while property and relocation requirements can be handled separately.

Start with the deadline, then work backwards

The most effective approach is to identify the exact school and entry year first, find the official registration deadline and then work backwards through every stage of the admissions process.

For highly selective British schools, waiting until the year before entry can be too late.

Families considering Eton, Harrow, Westminster, Sevenoaks, Winchester, Wellington or St Paul's should therefore begin researching several years ahead and maintain a separate calendar for registration, assessments, interviews, offers and enrolment.
