Non-UK Passport Companies House Verification - Fraser Bond

UK Company Verification Without a British Passport

Non-UK Passport Companies House Verification - Fraser Bond Property Legal, Risk & Compliance

How to Verify Identity at Companies House Without a UK Passport

You do not need a UK passport to complete Companies House identity verification. Non-UK directors can use an eligible biometric passport issued by another country through the GOV.UK One Login process.

This is particularly relevant for overseas directors, international investors and non-UK residents who operate UK companies.

Can I Verify Without a UK Passport?

Yes. A biometric passport from any country can be used for online Companies House identity verification. The passport must contain the biometric chip and meet the requirements of the verification service.

You do not need to hold British citizenship or live in the UK simply to complete the identity check.

How to Verify Using a Non-UK Passport

The usual process is:

  1. Start the Companies House identity verification process.

  2. Sign in to or create a GOV.UK One Login.

  3. Select the option to verify your identity.

  4. Use your biometric non-UK passport when prompted.

  5. Complete the required identity checks.

  6. Receive your Companies House personal code after successful verification.

  7. Provide the personal code to Companies House when required for your director or PSC role.

Your personal information should match the details held by Companies House. A mismatch can prevent the verified identity from being connected to your company role.

What If You Do Not Have a Biometric Passport?

If you do not have an eligible photo ID for the direct GOV.UK One Login route, you may still have another option.

You can use an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), such as an eligible accountant or solicitor, to verify your identity on your behalf.

The ACSP must be properly registered with Companies House and meet the required anti-money laundering supervision standards.

What If You Are Outside the UK?

Being outside the UK does not automatically prevent you from verifying your identity.

For overseas directors, the ACSP route can be particularly useful if you cannot complete the direct GOV.UK One Login process or do not have the required type of biometric identity document.

You should use a legitimate authorised provider and provide the identity documents they require for the verification process.

What Happens After Verification?

Once your identity has been successfully verified, Companies House issues a personal code.

The code belongs to you personally rather than to your company. You may use the same personal code for different company roles where required.

For a UK company director, the personal code is generally provided with the company's relevant confirmation statement or appointment filing.

What If Your Verification Fails?

If your verification attempt fails, first check that your name, date of birth and other relevant information match your Companies House record and identity document.

If you continue to have difficulty completing the direct verification process, an ACSP may provide an alternative route.

Do not ignore a failed verification if your company has an upcoming filing deadline.

Fraser Bond Companies House Verification Support

Fraser Bond provides practical UK company administration and corporate compliance support for overseas directors, non-UK residents, property investors and international businesses.

Verify Without a British Passport

The key point is simple: you do not need a UK passport to verify your identity with Companies House.

A suitable biometric passport from another country can be used through GOV.UK One Login. If you cannot use that route, an Authorised Corporate Service Provider may be able to verify your identity instead.
