Companies House Identity Verification Biometric Passport

A biometric passport is one of the main documents that can be used to complete Companies House identity verification. Importantly, you do not need a UK passport. A biometric passport issued by another country can be used through the GOV.UK One Login verification process.

This makes the process accessible to overseas directors, non-UK residents and international business owners with UK companies.

What Is a Biometric Passport?

A biometric passport contains an electronic chip that stores information used to help confirm the passport holder's identity.

You can usually identify one by the small biometric symbol on the front cover.

For Companies House online verification, a biometric passport from any country can be accepted through the GOV.UK One Login route.

Can I Use a Non-UK Biometric Passport?

Yes. Companies House specifically allows a biometric passport from any country for online identity verification.

You do not need to be a British citizen or live in the UK.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Non-UK resident company directors

  • Overseas property investors

  • International entrepreneurs

  • Foreign nationals with UK companies

  • Directors of UK companies living abroad

How to Verify With a Biometric Passport

The process generally involves:

  1. Start the Companies House identity verification process.

  2. Sign in to or create a GOV.UK One Login.

  3. Follow the instructions provided for identity verification.

  4. Use your biometric passport when requested.

  5. Complete the required identity checks.

  6. Receive your Companies House personal code after successful verification.

  7. Provide the code when required for your company role.

You will also need to provide information about yourself, including your current address and the year you moved there.

What If My Passport Is Not Biometric?

If your passport does not contain a biometric chip, you may not be able to use it through the standard GOV.UK One Login route.

You may instead be able to verify your identity through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider.

An ACSP can include an eligible accountant, solicitor or other professional registered with Companies House and supervised under UK anti-money laundering requirements.

What If My Biometric Passport Has Expired?

An expired passport cannot normally be used through the GOV.UK One Login app.

If your passport has expired, check the available Companies House verification options rather than assuming that the document will be accepted.

An ACSP may provide an alternative route where the direct online process is not suitable.

What Happens After Verification?

Once your identity has been successfully verified, Companies House issues a unique personal code.

The code belongs to you personally, not your company.

Directors use their personal code when required for relevant Companies House filings, including confirmation statements and director appointments.

Fraser Bond Companies House Verification Support

Verify Your Identity Before Your Filing Deadline

A biometric passport can make Companies House identity verification straightforward, even if you are not a UK passport holder.

If your biometric passport is suitable for the GOV.UK One Login route, you can complete the verification process online. If you cannot use that route, an Authorised Corporate Service Provider may be able to verify your identity instead.
