In short: Housing is one of the biggest factors in a successful return from prison. Prisons and probation must refer people likely to be homeless to the council, which then has duties to help. Charities such as Nacro and St Mungo's offer advice and supported housing, and Universal Credit can help with housing costs. In private renting, landlords assess affordability and references; being open, having a support worker reference and a guarantor can help.
