In short: Universal Credit can include a housing costs element to help pay rent. For private renters it's based on the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) for your area and household size, which is frozen for 2026/27, and it's usually paid to you, so you pay your landlord. Most single people under 35 get the lower shared accommodation rate. If your rent is higher than your LHA, you may face a shortfall; Discretionary Housing Payments from the council can help.
